Dog Training Tips

By profession, I (Fibromom) was a Special Educator, which means I had to know how to modify behavior.  Good parents and employers have the same skill, as do other sorts of trainers.  Sometimes, specialized techniques are required to obtain the desired knowledge, outcome, or behavior.

Animal rescues/shelters need to know whether the animal in question is going to be adoptable.  Many use an assessment called SAFER (Safety Assessment For Evaluation Rehoming).  This procedure “provides the staff the ability to evaluate a dog’s behavior accurately and efficiently, improving the chances that the adopted dog will remain in his hew home,” according to an article I read from Dog Pause, a free public service article provided by a little regional paper in our area called The Exchange, Dec. 19, 2008 issue. Below is the SAFER Test Process:

  1. The Stare Test gives clues regarding the dominance and submission of an animal.
  2. The Sensitivity Test assess social skills, sensitivity levels and level of fear.
  3. The Tag Test determines dominance aggression and fear aggression.
  4. The Pinch Test determines sensitivity, dominance and lack of bite inhibition.
  5. The Food Aggression Test determines food aggression.
  6. Dog-to-Dog Aggression Test determines sociability with other dogs.

The SAFER Test uses standard grades 1-5; a dog’s total grade is the LOWEST grade received on ANY portion of the test. 1 & 2 dogs are easily placed.  3 & 4 dogs are going to need some work and may be matched well with experienced dog owners. Dogs with a score of 5 are considered unsafe (we had a BABY PUPPY just 10 weeks of age that was deemed [by three different experts] as DANGEROUS and had to be put down.  We had waited two years for this pup to be conceived. The news was gut wrenching. Some dogs are “mis-wired.”)
