Q: I have a lot of experience in training puppies as pets. However, this new guy we adopted from a rescue shelter doesn’t seem to “get it” that “potty outside” is a requirement that we expect to be met 100% OF THE TIME! Any suggestions?
A:Try feeding him in the crate, letting him sleep in the crate. At least until he gets the message. Feed him, wait 10 minutes and take him directly outside. He will need to walk around. As soon as he goes, walk him around a few more minutes before you bring him in.
After he wakes from the night or a nap take him outside immediately and walk him.
If you trust him, let him off the leash. Keep a treat with you to condition him to watch you in case you are going to give him the treat.
In the morning after he goes outside, bring him in and feed him in the crate. wait ten minutes and take him out again. Let him walk, run play. He should move his bowels.
If he just pees and doesn't poo [or visa versa], bring him in a few minutes and take him out again.
Use a treat to keep him nearby outside. Soon, he should be able to go outside without a lead and do his business. You need to be out there with him though.
